November Seminar Summary:
Imagine that gut-sinking feeling when you learn that an ex-employee is suing you for wrongful termination. The argument is that the employee didn't know he was breaking the rules. Why? Because you didn't have an employee handbook to tell him the rules.
Why is it essential for employers to have an employee handbook and what needs to be in it? Register for this seminar to help create your first-ever manual or ensure your current one is up-to-date.
This seminar will discuss both the practical and legal need for complete and up-to-date employee handbooks. Participants will also learn the common pitfalls and mistakes that employers often make in drafting, implementing and failing to update employee handbooks.

Presenter: Lorna Geiler
Lorna Geiler brings Meyer Capel the benefits of a distinguished academic career. A 1986 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law and a 1983 cum laude graduate of Illinois State University, she joined the firm in 1988.
Since 1991, Lorna has represented employers before the Illinois Human Rights Commission, the Iowa Human Rights Commission, the Wisconsin Department of Equal Rights, the Pennsylvania Human Rights Commission, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Illinois Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board, the Illinois State Labor Relations Board and the National Labor Relations Board. She has also conducted in-house training for the State and local government investigators and commissioners.
In addition, she has practiced before the Trial, Appellate, and Supreme Courts for the State of Illinois and the Trial and Appellate Courts for the Central and Southern Districts of Illinois and the Southern District of Indiana. She has represented employers in union negotiations, grievances and unfair labor practices, as well as in union organization campaigns.
Lorna consistently represents public entities in compliance with the Illinois Open Meetings Act and the Freedom of Information Act as well as other issues unique to governmental and quasi-governmental bodies.
In 2009 Lorna K. Geiler was selected by her peers as a leading lawyer in Leading Lawyers Network Magazine | Women's Edition for Employment Law: Management. Lorna was also elected as a leading lawyer in 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2011 the Supreme Court of Illinois welcomed Lorna to the Committee on Jury Instructions in Civil Cases. From 2006 until 2017 Lorna served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Illinois College of Law.
