The City of Champaign seeks qualified candidates for a career opportunity as an Intern in the Information Technologies Department.
Responsibilities of Position
This position will learn about and gain hands on experience with a variety of municipal IT operations including hardware and software installation, maintenance, and support; documentation; and research. The Intern may also gain exposure to other key IT areas such as cybersecurity, systems administration, cloud/networking, and enterprise applications.
The position is in-person and for up to 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for Spring 2025, with the potential to continue as full-time during Summer 2026, if mutually agreeable. The position will begin January 2026.
Required Qualifications
- Current enrollment in a college or university-level degree program in Computer Engineering, Network Administration, or related field.
- Knowledge of computer hardware and software setup and troubleshooting or common computer operating systems.
- Experience with Microsoft suite of applications.
- Ability to effectively research various topics using a variety of sources.
- Ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical persons effectively.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to City employees, including effective communication skills and the ability to resolve concerns from upset or frustrated individuals.
- Ability to perform assigned job duties that require physical agility as noted in the job description, with or without accommodation, such as:
- Work in areas kept at lower temperatures (e.g. server room)
- Occasionally working in confined spaces and/or cramped body positions and in close proximity with others
- Possible proximity to electrical hazards
- Ability to lift up to approximately 50 pounds for up to 10 feet.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Windows-based operating systems.
